How to Scale a Commercial Ride On Mowing Business

The most memorable example of a business owner utilising finance to grow his business, was just a sole trader lawn mowing proprietor when we first met. His name is Steve.

Steve’s accountant had referred him to me to source finance on a new Walker ride on mower for $17,500. I secured finance with weekly repayments of around $95. He planned to load the mower onto the tray of his Toyota Hilux. His next step was to go out and win commercial work where he could utilise his new purchase.

6 months later

He phoned me 6 months later to arrange finance on another Walker and a used Hilux for $20,000. Financing total = $37,500.
He couldn’t keep up with his new commercial work and he planned to employ a man to operate the new mower and Hilux.

Over the next 3 years

Steve purchased and financed a further 6 Walker mowers and 6 used Hilux utes ($20,000 each) and employed 6 new men to operate them. In finance terms, financing total = $225,000.

Steve found himself no longer doing any hands on mowing work. ALL his time was spent chasing and winning new commercial work for his 7 employees and providing training and leadership to them.

Steve and his team were reliable, quality operators, and subsequently his commercial customers continued to refer new additional business to him, he did not have to chase it.
